What is a TXT Record?

A TXT (Text) record is a type of DNS record that provides text information to sources outside your domain, which can be used for a variety of arbitrary purposes.

Common Uses for TXT Records

  • SPF (Sender Policy Framework): Specifies which mail servers are authorized to send email on behalf of your domain. Typically looks like v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all.
  • DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance): Tells receiving mail servers what to do with messages that fail SPF or DKIM checks. Used on the _dmarc subdomain.
  • DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail): Holds the public key used to verify the digital signature of emails sent from your domain.
  • Site Verification: Services like Google Search Console, Microsoft, and Facebook use TXT records to verify that you own a domain before allowing you to use their services.
