What is a SERP?
SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. It's the page you see after entering a query into Google, Yahoo, or any other search engine. Optimizing how your site looks on this page is critical for improving your Click-Through Rate (CTR).
Character Limits
- Title Tags: Keep them under ~60 characters. Google actually measures titles in pixels (around 600px max on desktop). If it's too long, it will be truncated with an ellipsis (...).
- Meta Descriptions: Keep them under ~160 characters for desktop and ~120 characters for mobile. A good description should act like ad copy, giving searchers a reason to click your link.
Why does Google sometimes ignore my tags?
Google uses your title and meta description tags as suggestions. If Google's algorithm decides that a different snippet of text from your page better answers the user's specific search query, they will automatically rewrite your title or description in the actual search results.
