What is an MX Record?
An MX (Mail Exchange) record is a type of DNS record that specifies the mail server responsible for accepting email messages on behalf of a domain name.
Without proper MX records, a domain cannot receive emails. Senders will attempt to resolve the MX records and, if none exist, will fall back to the A record (which is usually not configured to handle mail), eventually causing the email to bounce.
How Priority Works
A domain can have multiple MX records. Each record has a priority value (often 0, 10, 20, etc.). When an email is sent to your domain, the sending server will attempt to contact the mail server with the lowest priority number first. If that server is unavailable, it will try the server with the next lowest priority number.
