How does LinkedIn generate previews?

LinkedIn uses the standard Open Graph (og:) meta tags to generate its link previews. If these tags are missing, it will attempt to scrape the standard <title> and first image it can find, which often leads to poor results.

LinkedIn Specific Quirks

  • No Description: LinkedIn recently updated their feed layout to completely hide the og:description in most cases. It only displays the image, title, and domain name.
  • Image Size: For the large image preview, your og:image should be at least 1200x627 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio). If the image is too small, LinkedIn will default to a tiny thumbnail layout.

Clearing the cache

If you've updated your tags but LinkedIn is still showing the old ones, you'll need to force their scrapers to fetch the page again. Use the official LinkedIn Post Inspector to clear the cache.
