How does Facebook generate previews?
Facebook created the Open Graph (og:) protocol. It reads og:title, og:description, and og:image to generate the preview cards seen in the News Feed and on Messenger.
Facebook Specific Quirks
- Truncation: Facebook aggressively truncates descriptions, often showing just one line or removing it entirely on mobile devices. Focus heavily on your Title and Image.
- Caching: Facebook heavily caches Open Graph data. If you change your tags, the old preview might still show for days.
Clearing the cache
To force Facebook to fetch your new tags immediately, you must use their official tool. Go to the Facebook Sharing Debugger, enter your URL, and click "Scrape Again".
