What is a CNAME Record?
A CNAME (Canonical Name) record is a type of DNS record that maps one domain name (an alias) to another domain name (the canonical or true name).
This is commonly used when multiple subdomains point to the same host. For example, www.example.com might be a CNAME pointing to example.com. It is also heavily used by CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) to route traffic.
Important Rules
- A CNAME record must point to another domain name, never directly to an IP address.
- You cannot place a CNAME record at the "apex" or "root" of a domain (e.g.,
example.com). It can only be used on subdomains. - If a CNAME record is present for a specific name (like
mail.example.com), no other record types (like A or MX) can exist for that same exact name.
