What is a Canonical URL?

A canonical URL is the HTML link tag (rel="canonical") that tells search engines like Google which version of a URL you want to appear in search results. It's the "master" or "preferred" version of a page.

Why are they important for SEO?

Websites often have multiple URLs that point to the exact same content. For example:

  • https://www.example.com/shoes (www vs non-www)
  • https://example.com/shoes/ (trailing slash)
  • https://example.com/shoes?sort=price (tracking or sorting parameters)

To search engines, these are four completely different pages with identical content. This causes "duplicate content" issues, splitting your page's ranking power. A canonical tag fixes this by telling the search engine that they should all be treated as the exact same page.
